He was born on February 5, 1882 in the bosom of a wealthy Cuban family. He was christened Alberto Manuel Francisco in Nuestra Señora de Monserrate church. He was the last son who used to be the spoilest and most showed, the great-grandson of Taita Ponce who brought his mother’s lineage from the distant African land, the dignity that was kept and uplifted at all costs at the end of the 17th Century.
