Peterson, Klobuchar call for increased U.S. food and commodity exports to Cuba

<p style="text-align: justify;">Washington, D.C. – House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Collin Peterson and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar joined members of the National Farmers Union (NFU) this week to call for passage of the Travel Restriction and Export Enhancement Act. It would boost U.S. agriculture by easing restrictions on the sale of homegrown food and commodities to Cuba. The Cuban government recently announced plans to eliminate a half million government jobs by April 1, 2011, while opening up new opportunities in cooperatives, in self-employment and in private business. The plan is to eventually transfer about 1 million people from Cuba's labor force of 5.1 million out of the state sector, where 95 percent now work, into other forms of employment. Cuban envoy to Spain says freed inmates are 'scum,' also media misreported Fidel

The Cuban political prisoners who were freed and flown to Madrid are "scum" creating problems, the Cuban ambassador to Spain said at a Communist Party seminar in San Fernando de Henares. Quoted by the Spanish daily El Mundo, Alejandro González Galiano denounced the efforts of several ex-inmates who are trying to convince the European Union to maintain its "common position" toward Cuba.
