HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 18 (acn) Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez received the acknowledgement of Ciudad Juarez, in Mexico, during a concert for peace, solidarity and Latin American fraternity, called "Voices from Latin America for Juarez."

Accompanied by the Trovarroco Trio, Rodriguez interpreted the songs "En el claro de la luna", "Sueño con serpientes", "Carta a Violeta Parra", "Escaramujo", "La era está pariendo un corazón" and Ojala".

Protected by forces from the Federal Preventive Police, thousands of people sang together these themes and enjoyed the music of one of the founders of the Cuban New Song Movement, the DPA news agency reports.

The concert, held at the Benito Juarez Olympic Stadium, located a few meters away from the US city of El Paso, Texas, represented a respite for the inhabitants of this city, who, for two years now, have been experiencing an intense wave of violence and tragedies, as a consequence of the war against drug trafficking.

At the end of his presentation of Friday, Rodriguez thanked the public and expressed "we won't forget you," while the audience applauded and asked the Cuban artist for another song.

Following Rodriguez on stage were Mexican Lila Downs and Puerto Rican salsa performer Willie Colon, who also contributed to alleviate with their music the sorrow over the violent acts plunging this city into mourning every day, where over 2,000 assassinations attributed to organized crime have taken place since January.

The evening "Voices from The Americas for Juarez" is part of the Sixth International Chihuahua Festival that began on September 4 and will end on October 1 in the state's capital.

French Emma Shapplin, tenors Mario Frangoulis, from Greece, Lessandro Safina, from Italy, and Mexican soprano Olivia Gorra, will perform in the closing gala.
