Cuban Javelin Thrower Qualifies for World Athletics Final

<p style="text-align: justify;">By: Osmany González Tocabens. 11:12Daegu, South Korea, Sept 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Guillermo Martinez on Thursday qualified for the men's javelin throw final in the 2011 World Athletics Championships. Martinez, silver in Berlin-2009, threw 83.77 meters in his first attempt, which was the best mark in the first qualifying round. Russian Dmitri Taraban (82.92 mts) followed the Cuban thrower, also qualifying for the final in a qualifying round that only required a minimum mark of 82.50 mts. Read More

Japanese and Cuban Artists to Share the Stage in Havana

The meeting will be a fruitful way to bring once again, culturally, the two peoples closer together, the Granma newspaper reported. Director Yoshizaku Fukumura, already known by music lovers in the capital, will be present along with violinists Ryu Goto and Masuo Nishibayashi (also Cuba’s ambassador to Havana,) and oboist Keisuke Wakao. 13th Tropical Depression of Season in Gulf of Mexico

Cuba's Meteorology Institute has reported that the center of the system at 06:00 local time was at 26.5 degrees North and 91.7 degrees West, 425km south-souteast of Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the southern United States. DESPITE the 12 hour difference in time, this spectator-reporter was alert to every accomplishment achieved by the Cuban athletes participating in the 13th World Athletics Championship in the South Korean city of Daegu, a track and field Mecca.Full of hope, I began my trek, to see discus throwers Yarelis Barrios (63.80) and Denia Caballero (60.36) classify third and eighth for the final. I was amazed to see something unprecedented, six Kenyan women on the marathon medal podium, as well as that of the 10,000 meters, led by Edna Kiplagat (2:28:43) and Vivian Cheruiyot (30:48.98). State lawmakers head to Cuba next week on trade mission

SPRINGFIELD—About a dozen state lawmakers are headed for Cuba next week for a trip they hope will boost Illinois exports. The six-day tour is being led by Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, and Rep. Dan Burke, D-Chicago. They said no taxpayer dollars will be spent on the excursion.
