Cuban Javelin Thrower Qualifies for World Athletics Final

By: Osmany González Tocabens. 11:12Daegu, South Korea, Sept 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Guillermo Martinez on Thursday qualified for the men's javelin throw final in the 2011 World Athletics Championships.
Martinez, silver in Berlin-2009, threw 83.77 meters in his first attempt, which was the best mark in the first qualifying round.
Russian Dmitri Taraban (82.92 mts) followed the Cuban thrower, also qualifying for the final in a qualifying round that only required a minimum mark of 82.50 mts.
In the sixth date of competitions, the bad news was the injury suffered by Cuban triple jumper Yargelis Savigne, twice world champion, who quit in the final due to an injury on her right thigh.
After Savigne's withdrawal, Ukranian Olha Saladuha made her best in the first attempt of the triple jump event winning the gold with a 14.94 meter mark, ahead of Kazahstani Olga Rypakova (14.89 mts) and Colombian Caterine Ibargüen (14.84 mts).
Cuban triple jumper Mabel Gay, silver in Berlin-2009, recorded her personal best mark of 14.67 mts but ended in fourth place.
