2011.08.31 - 15:42:14 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Victories for Cuba’s Dominguez and Bruzon in Second Round of World Chess CupHAVANA, CUBA.-  Cuban Grand Masters (GM) Leinier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon began the second round of the World Chess Cup, under way in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk, with victories in the first of their two classical matches against Moldavian GM Viktor Bologan and Spanish GM Francisco Vallejo.

Playing with the black pieces, Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, beat the veteran Bologan (2,678) after 62 moves of a Sicilian Defense.

Meanwhile, although at times in difficult positions and also playing with the black pieces, Bruzon (2,673) managed to overcome Vallejo (2,724) in 66 moves of a Scottish Opening.

The Cuban players will face the same opponents on Thursday —with the advantage of playing with the white pieces— and they only need a draw to advance to the third round of the tournament or Round of 32.

Other outstanding players who took victories on Wednesday were Ukrainian GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2,768), Azerbaijan’s GM Vugar Gashimov (2,760) and Russian GM Dmitry Jakovenko (2,736).(ACN)
