Cuban singer to go on US tour in June

Communist Party sets date for conference

<p style="text-align: justify;">Setting political reform into motion after ratifying a 313-point economic reform package, the Communist Party scheduled a national conference for Jan. 28.The central issues of the meeting will be “to evaluate the Party’s work” and “determining necessary transformations” to Party statutes and structures, an announcement in the Juventud Rebelde newspaper said. The party that is formally the leading state institution has played a tag-along and low-profile role, and the historic leadership sees reviving the institution as a crucial last task before leaving the stage. In April, the party’s rank-and-file had their first congress since 1998, eight years after they were supposed to meet, according to Party statutes. Read More

Cuba introduces new book on Uncle Ho

Garcia Oliveras was made public in Havana on May 24 on the occasion of his 121st birth anniversary (May 19, 1980-2011). Speaking at the ceremony, held by the Institute of International Relations (IIR) under the Cuban Foreign Ministry, IIR Director Isabel Allende praised the life and revolutionary career of late President Ho Chi Minh, who devoted all of his life to the struggle for national independence and liberation. Liem finishes second at Havana chess tournament

Bean Harvest in Holguin Key to Reduce Imports

Bean fields in the municipality of Calixto Garcia, another stronghold of bean production in Holguin province. The 4.133,6 tons of beans produced in the Cuban province of Holguin, over 900 above planned, is a step forward in the country's zeal of reducing imports. According to local sources, until yesterday some 2.981,6 tons of beans had been gathered, what represents 73% of the total production. New entrepreneurs on the rise in socialist Cuba

HAVANA (Reuters) – Under reforms by President Raul Castro, a new entrepreneurial class is developing and with it some new ways of thinking in a country that has long resisted economic change. The government reported recently that 310,000 Cubans are working legally for themselves, of whom 221,000 have received their licenses for self-employment since last fall, when Castro announced an expansion of the private sector.
