Senate blocks the closure of Guantanamo Naval Base
With 71 votes in favor and 25 against; the United States Senate has approved a text on the defense bill and a budget of 612 billion dollars for 2016. The Democrats have voted against the project by the budget increase intended for emergency war expenses, which would not be subject to current limits.
The new law not only would not lift the current restrictions for the closure of the Guantanamo Naval Base, but also maintain the impossibility of transfer of the 116 prisoners held there.
Moreover, Republicans aimed at increasing the obstacles for the transfer of prisoners and obtain guarantees from the US government that those released will not return to the battlefield.
