The Cuba’s Language Academy will not attend to the 5th International Congress of the Spanish language, to be held from March 2nd-5th in the Chilean city of Valparaiso, considering that "people with no reference to reflect and discuss the course of Spanish language have been invited, and whose presence in the event can only be interpreted as a political provocation."

In a statement released last Monday, the direction of the Cuban institution regrets the insertion in the program, already warned by the Royal Academy director Spanish Victor Garcia de la Concha on June 13th, a way to making feasible the meeting that "represented a distortion of the nature, missions, the very identity of our academies," while "stressing the importance that we focused on the cultural dimension of language."

"We observed—the statement reads—that many of the convened people had no references to certify their statements about language, and the representation of areas and social sectors was very slanted. We warned that in these conditions, the conclave could become a media and political forum rather than scientific, and fought for being careful about the suitability of the participants."

Cuban academics acknowledged the effort of Garcia de la Concha to promote the participation of national institutions in the Congress, but organizers persisted in fostering what is clearly presented as an anti-Cuba media show, and agreed not to attend the forum.

"With this decision—they state—our Academy keeps faithful to its principles, its statutes and the dictates of the Association of Spanish Language Academies to which we are proud to belong. We earnestly hope that measures can be taken so that such
unfortunate situations, which undermines our unity and impedes the work of dialogue that has taken so long to achieve, must not be repeated."
