Cuban authorities opened a 39-mile road in the strategic peninsula of Guanahacabibes, in the country's western area that will benefit tourism development and national security plans.

To Rebel Army Major Julio Camacho Aguilera, main promoter of the work, it is the result of a process started in 1974, with the construction of a causeway up to San Antonio Cape, the first access by to the area.

According to Granma newspaper, finishing this road will increase security in the country, making easier to access an area through which enemies of our country had tried to smuggle weapons into the Cuban territory more than once.

It will favour in a great extent to develop in the peninsula, as the construction of around 800 rooms in five beaches, the same source said

The works to build the road opened on Sunday were delayed several times, due to the impact of hurricanes, including Ivan in 2004, which caused flooding that destroyed almost 9 miles that were already concluded.
