The UN General Assembly called on Friday the international community demanding immediate, sustainable and adequate aid for Haiti, after an earthquake devastated that country on January 12.

The top UN body met in plenary session to approve a draft resolution, whose project convenes UN member countries and bodies, financial institutions and development agencies to support the Haitian people.

The document also urges the international community to support the role the UN has assumed for coordinating the assistance to Haiti and its government, to guarantee a coherent response to the humanitarian emergency.

It also expresses concern for the mid and long term consequences of the disaster on Haiti's social and economic development.

The official number of UN personnel dead in Haiti increased to 61 (24 soldiers, 12 police agents, and 25 civil workers), and the number of missing was reduced to 180.
