Cubas Haydee Santamaria Medal Bestowed on Two Foreign Artists
Culture Minister Abel Prieto and Casa President Roberto Fernandez Retamar presented the high distinction to Martorell and Maite Zamorano, Ferrari’s granddaughter. Ferrari couldn’t travel to the Cuban capital for heath reasons.

This medal is granted by the Cuban Council of State to national and foreign citizens with a useful life and high quality of intellectual work throughout the years, and who have contributed to the enrichment and defense of the genuine culture of the peoples in The Americas, as well as to their integration.

Martorell highlighted that the Casa de las Americas is a safe haven for Latin American and Caribbean artists, and said he received the medal on behalf of his people, the only US colony in the region. He added that political will and poetic sensitivity blend together in his work, in a symbiosis of ethics and aesthetics.

He thanked Cuba for the opportunity of working with numerous national and foreign artists and reaffirmed his vocation of making truth grow more beautiful and create beauty out of it.

Leon Ferrari (1920) is a true representative of conceptual art. Wars and political repression are recurrent themes in his works, which have been exhibited in Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Cuba, the United States, Germany, Uruguay and Spain, among other nations.

At present, the Casa de las Americas has an exhibition of his works on display. Entitled “Agitador de formas”, it’s made up by about one hundred pieces – a sort of retrospective of his most vital and creative moments.

Martorell (1939) has developed a permanent pedagogical vocation and his work is one of the most outstanding expressions of artistic production in Latin America and the Caribbean over the last four decades.
