Cuba in Latin American Safe Hospital Program
He ranked Cuba among the countries that approved the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) guide of vulnerability evolution, a strategy that helps identify problems, establish priorities and guidelines.

The expert told Prensa Latina that the program sets a deadline for the region to secure optimum hospital protection at times of catastrophe. A safe hospital keeps services accessible and works full time with the same infrastructure during and immediately after a disaster.

The above also involves protecting buildings and technology, keeping organization, setting up network services and being able to assist the patients, said Dr. Mesa.

On January 2005, 168 countries approved the accord at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction among the priority goals for 2015.

The PAHO says the region has 16,000 hospitals and half are located in risk-prone areas.

So, on the World's Health Day on April 7 they will concentrate on hospital safety and ready their staff assisting the victims in emergency situation.

Both hospitals and their specialized staff are vital for the vulnerable population in case of disaster to prevent diseases, treat wounds and meet other needs, says the World Health Organization (WHO).

We must protect public health by designing and providing safe services in case of natural disasters and protecting them from attacks amid conflicts, says the WHO.

Health workers must be taught to work safely in emergency situations to be able to save lives and avoid being themselves victims, adds the document.

They must also guarantee the continuity of medical services like vaccines, dialysis and deliveries, once immediate emergency has past.

We can not prevent all the disasters but we can work together so that when they occur, hospitals and other services are ready and be able to save lives, said the WHO.
