Cuba Advanced Technology in Surgery
Garcia told ACN that there has been a considerable development in the minimum access surgery, of which some 35,000 were performed in 2007. He also underlined the training of human resources in this field in Cuba, left with only 75 surgeons in 1959 and today with more than 1,500, plus 200 residents in all of the country's faculties.

More than half a million operations, both major and minor, are carried out every year, and among plans for this sector is an increase in the training of these professionals -who also offer their services to other needy peoples abroad, "free of charge," García specified.

Diligence, devotion to patients, a permanent desire to advance scientifically, emotional stability, and unselfishness, are among qualities surgeons should have, stressed the physician, who has devoted more than 50 years to the profession.

Cuba's progress in this field will be shown during the 10th Cuban Congress on Surgery and the Regional Meeting of the Latin American Federation, to be held at Havana's Convention Center from December 2-5.
