Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer Tribute Concert to Víctor Jara
Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer will pay tribute September 12 to revolutionary Chilean folk singer Victor Jara on the 35th anniversary of his murder.

Brouwer will offer a special presentation Friday at Havana’s San Francisco de Asis Basilica called Victor Jara in Memorium: 35 years later. The concert will feature the premiere of two new compositions dedicated to Jara: Variaciones de un tema de Victor Jara para guitarra, (Variations on a theme by Victor Jara for guitar), composed in 2007, and Elegia por Victor Jara, (Elegy for Victor Jara), for string orchestra, written in 2008.

Granma newspaper reported that joining Brouwer for the concert are Chilean guitarist Marcelo de la Puebla, Argentine guitarist Victor Pellegrini, Cuban flautist Niurka Gonzalez Nuñez, Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez Salicio, the Amadeo Roldan String Quartet, and the Solistas de La Habana Orchestra.

Victor Jara was tortured and murdered in city of Santiago de Chile on September 16, 1973 by the repressive forces of the US-backed dictator Augusto Pinochet who launched a coup, overthrowing Salvador Allende.

A culture icon in Chile, Jara’s songs have been passed down from generation to generation throughout Latin America.
