Fidel Castro Sends Message of Congratulations to Paraguayan People
The message was delivered by Cuban First VP Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, who arrived on Thursday in Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital, to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of president-elect Fernando Lugo on Friday.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, Machado Ventura also delivered warm greetings from the President of the Cuban councils of State and Ministers Raul Castro.

The Cuban senior official was received at the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport by the outgoing Paraguayan Health Minister Oscar Martinez Doldan and by the Cuban ambassador in Asuncion, Adolfo Curbelo.

“Solidarity between Cuba and Paraguay will increase,” said Machado Ventura.

Currently, there are 20 Cuban health professionals making their contribution at the Maria Auxiliadora Ophthalmological Center in Paraguay while 874 youths from the South American country are studying in Cuba.

The Cuban delegation also includes the head of the Department of Foreign Relations at the Central Committee of Cuba’s Communist Party, Fernando Remirez de Estenoz; Deputy Foreign Minister Alejandro Gonzalez and Deputy Raul Suarez, president of the Cuba-Paraguay Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Cuban National Assembly.

During their stay in Paraguay, the members of the Cuban delegation will hold official talks with the new government authorities in the South American nation and will participate in a series of activities scheduled for the occasion.

According to press reports, nine heads of state and government as well as delegations from 97 countries will participate in the swearing-in ceremony on Friday.

Bolivian Evo Morales, Venezuelan Hugo Chavez, Argentinean Cristina Kirchner, Brazilian Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Uruguayan Tabare Vazquez, Chilean Michelle Bachelet, Ecuadorian Rafael Correa and Honduran Manuel Zelaya have confirmed their presence in the ceremony.
