Cuba and Brazil confirmed the excellent state of their relations and their broad agreement on key international issues during a “cordial, deep and wide ranging” meeting held between the nations’ respective foreign ministers.

After an exchange that allowed them to approach matters of bilateral and world concern, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and his Cuban counterpart Felipe Pérez Roque signed a complementary adjustment to an existing cooperation agreement with a view to stimulating the production of soy in Cuba. This will allow the island to benefit from the experience and advice of various Brazilian institutions “in a decisive moment for the production of food,” said the Cuban Chancellor when highlighting the importance of the agreement.

Pérez Roque also expressed thanks to Amorim and his government for their hosting of the “historic event” constituted by the foundation of the South American Union of Nations (UNASUR), while the Brazilian guest noted his satisfaction with the work of Cuba in preparing for the Latin American and Caribbean meeting planned for the end of the year.

“Respect, trust, friendship and mutual understanding mark the Cuba-Brazil nexus,” Pérez Roque said, as he commented on the possibilities for mutual economic cooperation and investment, for which relationships have received “a new impulse.”

The Brazilian official said that since the January visit of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva Lula, the relationship between the countries has entered a “new phase” – one in which Brazil wants to be “Cuba’s number one partner.”
