Elderly population in Cuba
The aging population and problems among the elderly will be at the center of an international forum to be held this month in the Cuban eastern city of Bayamo, the organizing committee informed Tuesday.

The event will take place November 20-23 in Bayamo, about 450 miles from Havana, which is considered one of the cities with the oldest population rate nationwide.

Experts from Mexico, Spain, and Cuba will also analyze government policies to assist the elderly population, as well as the role of education in the study and application of strategies for social insertion programs.

Physicians, social workers, psychologists, teachers, and representatives from trade unions and other organizations will present their experiences in programs for economic assistance to the elderly, as well as treatment of frequent disorders among them.

In Cuba, the elderly population represents over 14 percent of the total, the highest in Latin America, and within 20 years, one in every four inhabitants is expected to be over 60 years.
