China passes cuban cholesterol drug

Chinese health authorities granted permission to polycosanol, a new anti-cholesterol drug made in Cuba, to be marketed in the Asian nation, it was reported at a news conference Thursday.
The decision was revealed by Che Xianliang, president of the Shanchuan Pharmaceutical group, who said this will step up his companies collaboration with Cuba s Dalmer Lab.
The Shanchuan group will distribute the product in China, where later it will be locally packed and produced.
Polycosanol or "Ateromixol," also known as PPG, is a Cuban product made of a mixture of alcohols with high molecular density, aimed at reducing blood lipid levels.
Scientists consider that a high blood cholesterol is one of the main causes of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases.
