The Swiss government announced today that its Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter will travel to Cuba at the invitation of his US counterpart John Kerry to attend the historic ceremony of reopening the US embassy in Havana.
Burkhalter will be in Cuba on August 13 and 14, and the first day is dedicated to meetings with senior Cuban politicians, including Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.
The next steps in the process of rapprochement between Cuba and the US, reforms on the island, multilateral cooperation and human rights will be the main topics discussed at the meeting, announced the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
On the 14th, Burkhalter will take part in the solemn ceremony of reopening the US diplomatic mission on the island, more than half a century after the two countries broke diplomatic relations.
Switzerland agreed in 1961 Washington's request to assume the role of protector State to defend US interests in Cuba.
