Over a thousand children from 1-5 years of age are receiving the pneumococcal vaccine as part of phase II and III clinical trial to be held in Cienfuegos. The Doctor Vicente Vérez Bencomo, CEO of the Center for Biomolecular Chemistry, explained that phase one of three doses concluded with infants seven, eight and 11 months old.
He also announced that now begin testing in infants of two, four and six months in the Havana municipality of Marianao, La Lisa and Playa, where pediatric hospital Juan Manuel Marquez is the center for the application of this immunogen in injectable form.
The expert said that if the results validated in clinical trials are confirmed, the application would be in the child two doses of one to two years and one for three to five. He predicted that in late 2015 and early 2016 the vaccine should be ready to be introduced to the child.
The pneumococcus is one of the three bacteria that cause meningitis, pneumonia and bacterial sepsis in children; the other two are meningococcal germs and Haemofillus influenzae type B.
