Nearly 1,478 Cubans have been benefited from 2004 to May 2010 with a stem cell treatment, improving living standard, Granma newspaper reported.

The 74 percent of that number are people with severe ischemia in the lower limbs and vascular diseases (Angiology), and they are incapable of responding to conventional therapy.

According to Doctor Porfirio Hernandez, coordinator of the National Group for Regenerative Medicine at the Ministry of Public Health, Havana City is the province with more advanced cases.

The use of the so-called regenerative cell therapy in orthopedics and traumatology with 301 assisted patients has increased progressively in the country, Hernandez stated.
