HAVANA, Cuba.- More than 100,000 Nicaraguans from the Department of Rivas have benefited from the Psychosocial, Pedagogical and Clinical-Genetic Study of People with Disabilities, a project led by Cuban physicians in countries that are members of the Bolivarian Alliance for The Americas (ALBA).

This research work brings together specialists from various disciplines and it’s considered the only one of its kind, because it studies patients in their social and family environment, taking into account their material needs.

It began in Cuba in 2001 and it includes Venezuela, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ecuador, and there are plans to extend it to Dominica and to Antigua and Barbuda before the end of 2010.

The study has identified one million 17,464 persons suffering from some kind of disability as well as the causes originating them in each region, with the purpose of helping governments to prevent them.
