Six proposals will be considered to become the next artwork on the Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square.

Two ideas come from duos - Jennifer Allora of the US and Cuba's Guillermo Calzadilla, plus Denmark's Michael Elmgreen and Norwegian Ingar Dragset.

The other artists are Germans Katharina Fritsch and Mariele Neudecker, as well as Brian Griffiths from London and Edinburgh-born Hew Locke.

The winner will be announced by Mayor Boris Johnson early next year.

Their work will be installed in 2012.

The current occupant is Nelson's Ship in a Bottle by Yinka Shonibare, a scale replica of HMS Victory, which was unveiled in May.

It commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar and the 50th anniversary of independence in Nigeria, where the artist grew up.

The ship replaced a statue of an RAF hero from World War II, Sir Keith Park, and a project by Antony Gormley - One and Other - where members of the public addressed crowds from the plinth for an hour at a time.

Scale models of the six new nominees' work will go on display in the church next to the square, St Martin in the Fields, from 19 August.

The chair of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, Ekow Eshun, said he and his colleagues were "excited by this strong shortlist, which represents leading artists from different nations".
