HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 12 (acn) Participants in the 12th Iberian-American Conference of Health Ministers that concluded in Buenos Aires, Argentina, praised the work of the Havana-based Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) over the last decade.

Prensa Latina news agency reports that the health ministers of Venezuela and Bolivia, Eugenia Sader and Nila Heredia, highlighted the significant contribution of ELAM to the training of high-quality professionals —mainly youths from low-income families— from nearly 30 countries, including the United States.

Since its inauguration in 1999, more than 7,200 doctors in medicine have graduated from ELAM, where there are currently 10,000 students being trained free of charge.

Cuban Deputy Health Minister Roberto Gonzalez praised the excellent quality of the discussions in the meeting that took place under the slogan “Toward the Creation of a Renovated Agenda on Health and Education Integration.”

“In Cuba we have reached a solid unity between the health and education systems, two sectors that are essential for development,” he noted.
