GENEVA, May 21 (acn) Cuban Deputy Health Minister Jose Angel Portal reiterated at the 63rd annual meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva a call to redouble commitments made in this field with the peoples.

While addressing participants in the meeting, Doctor Portal pointed out the limited advances achieved at a world level in the attainment of the modest and insufficient objectives for the fulfilment of the Development Goals agreed at the Millennium Summit.

The head of the Cuban delegation to that forum, that winds up on Friday, denounced the continuous nonobservance on the part of developed nations of their responsibility to help nations from the South in their efforts to develop quality systems and systems of universal coverage.

Portal presented the indicators obtained by Cuba, which rank among the most outstanding at an international level and confirmed the fulfilment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the sphere of activities of the WHO, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.

He affirmed that this has been possible in spite of the fact that the island has been submitted for five decades to a cruel US blockade, non quantifiable in terms of the pain and suffering of families, and the economic impact of which on health services total over two billion dollars a year.

The Cuban delegation receives numerous expressions of acknowledgment and appreciation for the work of the over 38,000 health workers now offering their services in 78 nations and for its enormous efforts to train 100,000 doctors from fraternal countries in a 10-year period.

During the meeting at the Swiss city, the deputy minister held bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations from East Timor,Chad, Peru, Sudan, Oman and Madagascar and also with the top representatives of the nations that are members of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA).
