About 253 protected areas are identified in Cuba, from which 105 are effectively managed to guarantee the conservation of nature and cultural resources.

Specialist of the National Center of Protected Areas explained to press media their projects until 2013.

One of them is dedicated to the protection and management of sea coastal areas in the south part of the Island in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the non-governmental organization Global Enviroment Found (GEF).

Aimed at rescuing biomass of fishes, mangrove swamps and corals, the project covers since the western province of Pinar del Rio up to Santiago de Cuba.

Another initiative will be the flora and fauna conservation in the eastern cities of Holguin and Las Tunas, under the auspices of Birdlife International.

The National System of Protected Areas works also in biodiversity conservation, weather regulation and protection of coasts and basins, as well as the exploitation of genetic resources and the water production.

The institution will mark next April 12 the 80 anniversary of the first protected area in Cuba, Pico Cristal National Park in Holguin.
