Yvette Cepeda

Once upon a time a teacher who bet on singing and succeeded. In synthesis this is the real story of Ivette Cepeda, a kind of iconic image, which tours different night centers of the capital almost all nights and her fans do not let her go before cheering her name in the purest football style.

I admit that the heavy insistence of some friends, who knew and admired her, plus the praises they lavished on her, which looked excessive, were the ingredients that activated my curiosity and I decided to see her one night with certain skepticism, and an unusual cold.

After a while there appeared on the small stage a slim young-looking who smiling and with warm voice welcomed the audience cordially. Without further ado, she sang “Comienzo y final de una verde mañana”, by Pablo, and continued –among applauses and requests–with Sabina, Serrat, Silvio, Alberto Vera, Olga Navarro and some other authors who she makes cover versions of with her very personal touch. The way she sang “Perdóname conciencia” was memorable.

Owner of a beautiful and refined voice, impeccable diction and phrasing, Ivette Cepeda also has charisma –or that so-called angel–, which makes that people connect with her, and that has earned her a number of fans who follow her in her night performances at El Sauce, El Gato Tuerto, or El Tocororo.

Her public not only includes ordinary people, but also colleague artists, such as Tania Pantoja, Arnaldo Rodríguez, Marta Campos or Léster Hamlet, with whom, by the way, she makes an amazing duo.

She knows how to elegantly sort, without losing her gracefulness, those manifestations of bad manners that often take place at crowded places, where some people do not have an adequate social behavior, attains that the audience listen to her and imposes herself thanks to her display of voice, talent and charm, which she boasts about.

Although Ivette –if García Márquez does not mind– does not have anyone to write to her, the repertoire chosen for her presentations is varied and the arrangements manage to exploit her vocal possibilities. The musical accompaniment comes from “Reflexión” group, led by José Luis “Chichi” Beltrán.

For a bit more than an hour, Ivette sings what she has prepared, but also pleases her audience, which does not get tired requesting her this or that song, always with a smile that evokes an author, she shares an anecdote, presents a guest, recalls friends, creating a spontaneous and natural atmosphere, deprived of false divisms.

I reveal no secret, if I say that Ivette Cepeda has become the musical phenomenon of the moment, no matter whether she is a music graduate or not, started late in her career or sings very famous songs, she recreates them and makes them hers. I think that’s the charm she exerts among those who go to listen to her. That is the key of the Ivette-Audience extraordinary rapport, which has turned her, without discussion, into the Queen of Havana Nights.
