The Ministry of Public Health informed that at Havana’s Psychiatric Hospital, which has 2500 beds, there has been a rise in the mortality of the admitted patients this week and 26 are reported dead.

According to the note, these events are linked to the prolonged low temperatures that have reached up to 3.6°C in Boyeros, municipality where the hospital is located.

Also to risk factors specific of psychiatric diseases, the natural biological deterioration due to aging, respiratory infections in a year, where this disease shows an epidemic behaviour, and the complications of chronic conditions present in many of them, mainly cardiovascular and cancer.

In view of the described situation, the Ministry of Public Health decided to create a commission to investigate what happened, given that until the moment of writing out this note it has identified several deficiencies linked to absence of timely measures.

The official note indicates that those responsible for these events will be submitted to the corresponding courts.
