Cuba Ends 2009 with 4.8 Infant Mortality Rate

Such result is backed up by the efficient work of the health system and the political will of the Cuban administration, noted Granma daily.
The influenza chiefly attacked pregnant women, just given birth women (the first 42 days after the delivery), and children under one-year-old or those of any age suffering chronic diseases.
According to the report in 2009 of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Cuba is followed in America by Canada with 6 and the US with 7 infant mortality rates per 1000 live births
Cuban pregnant women are hospitalized when flu symptoms are diagnosed. An antiviral treatment is administered before the 48 hours of the beginning of the symptoms, reported Granma.
The daily added that those measures are also adopted in children of any age who suffer chronic diseases, such as asthma and diabetes. Those children with no associated biological risks are kept under treatment at home.
A total of 14,221 pregnant women and 75,000 children under one-year-old received the antiviral treatment in the Caribbean country in the last four months, noted Granma.
