Holguin was named after the second last name of the Spanish captain Francisco Garcia de Holguin.

Being very young, Francisco formed part of the expedition organized by conquistador Herman Cortes in 1518 aimed at overtaking the great Aztec Empire.

The courage and audacity shown by Captain Francisco Garcia de Holguin was rewarded by Diego Velazquez who granted him some land in 1523 where today Holguin city is located.

That way in 1545, Francisco Garcia de Holguin, his wife and a group of 50 to 80 people, and under the religious invocation of Saint San Isidoro, founded what he later called the San Isidoro de Holguin farm, the seed of the present day Cuban eastern city of Holguin.
