Pineapple fruit development has been taking place in Ciego de Ávila from January to November, with the planting over one thousand 700 hectares of pineapple, papaya, guava and mango.

The figure thoroughly surmounts the plan for the period, and has been attained by means of a project dedicated to retrieve productions necessary for the industries, the local market and tourist sector, aiming at the reduction of imports.

Among the plantations stand out those of pineapple with an encouraging panorama stretching to eight out of the 10 Avilanian municipalities, said Jesus Trujillo López, specialist of the sector.

Trujillo added that by the end of the year, there will be over 600 the hectares of pineapple in the territory, in some of which the harvest will start next January.

Over a hundred rural families are engaged in growing pineapple, by means of a program of the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Association of Small Farmers, with advanced technology and enhanced seedlings.
