 A plaque to pay homage to late Cuban scientist Maria Elena Ibarra
Ibarra Martin, PHD in Biology, Permanent Professor at the Zoology Department of the University of Havana’s Biology Faculty and director of the Marine Research Center since 1981, was a promoter of important projects aimed to develop an environment-friendly conscience in the population.

She masterminded the program “Conservation of sea turtles at the Guanahacabibes Peninsula” and also carried out admirable work on the study, environmental education and general research for the preservation of this marine species and Cuban nature as a whole.

The scientist, as well as director of the Pronaturaleza organization, died in May of this year, and her last will was to have her ashes laid to rest in the western province of Cuba, Pinar del Río.

The ceremony, to be held at 9.30 PM, is part of a program carried out by the Patrimony, Community and Environment Society in Havana city’s Historical Center to celebrate World Environment Day this June 5 th, informed the city Historian’s Office.
