Created in 1989, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Casa de las Americas, the distinction is granted to people and groups from Cuba and other countries, which have enriched and defended genuine Latin American culture with relevant academic work.

Martorell gave in 2003 an international workshop "Charcoal copies," whose participants reproduce, with drawings, a series of works from the National Fine Arts Museum.

In 1999, he left his mark as a Casa de las Americas creator and in neighboring spaces.
