The National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba made Nobel Laureates in Economics Robert Mundell and Edmund Phelps honorary members during the second day of the 11th International Gathering of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems ongoing in Havana.

Honduran President José Manuel Zelaya presented Mundell with the distinction, while Phelps received it from the hands of Cuban Vice President José Ramon Machado Ventura. This is the third time that the two distinguished US academics have participated in this event.

Edmund Phelps wife, Vivian Phelps, addressed the plenary session on Tuesday calling for an end to the US blockade of Cuba. She also expressed her and her husband’s gratitude for being invited for the third time to the event.

The International Gathering of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems was founded by Fidel Castro as a space to analyse the problems of neoliberal globalization and its effects on countries and peoples.
