Economists Gathered in Havana Focus on Global Economic Crisis
The event was inaugurated today at Havana’s Conventions Palace in the presence of Leonel Fernandez, President of the Dominican Republic and Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, First Cuban Vice President.

In his opening speech at the gathering, the president of the National Association of Economists and Accountants Roberto Verrier cited statements by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro during prior encounters of this kind held in Havana.

Verrier recalled that Fidel had warned that the world was under the threat of neo-liberal globalization and that it could not survive for a long time, since sooner or later it would stop existing. He said that the economic crisis that originated in the United States is not just another crisis, and that it has not reached its peak yet.

The Cuban expert stressed that as a consequence of the crisis unemployment levels continues to increase, while US President Barack Obama tries to solve the banking system, with his financial plans.

Verrier, who is also vice-president of the Latin American and Caribbean Association of Economists, underscored the need for a critical analysis on the issue by the international community, particularly by the United Nations, since the plans designed by the elites of power or the rich nations can not be imposed on the world.

The opening of the international forum was also attended by Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo and Communist Party leaders. The attendance of Nobel Economy laureates Edmund Phelps and Robert Mundell, and of other personalities was announced during the session.

Today’s session included a panel titled “From the Financial to the Global Economic Crisis: Impacts and Lessons.”
