Eighth Festival of New Filmmakers Begins in Havana
The festival will be divided into different sections, including productions by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry (ICAIC), international productions and posters.

Competing in different categories are 21 full-length films, 36 documentaries and 15 short animation movies.

The jury is made up of directors Pavel Giroud and Arturo Infante, director of photography Rigoberto Senarega, animation filmmaker Alexander Rodríguez, and composer Juan Piñera. The prize for best poster will be selected by graphic designers Giselle Monzón, Claudio Sotolongo and Edel Rodríguez.

Among the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of ICAIC will be screenings of some of the classics from the past five decades including Lucía, by Humberto Solás; La primera carga al machete, by Manuel Octavio Gómez; Madagascar, by Fernando Pérez; and Memorias del subdesarrollo, by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. There will be also screenings of the ICAIC newsreels and animated shorts.

The documentaries that will be screened are: El sur del Maniadero, El arte del tabaco, David, Ella vendía coquitos, Despegue a las 18.00, Espiral, Hombres del cañaveral, Mineros and Miriam Makeba.

During the festival, there will also be a special exhibition dedicated to Cuban female directors including Sara Gómez, Rebeca Chávez, Miriam Talavera, Lourdes de los Santos, Belkis Vega, Lizette Vila, Patricia Ramos and Niurka Pérez.

In addition, there will be workshops and presentations by Jorge Luis Sánchez, Juan Carlos Cremata, Manuel Iglesias, Manuel Pérez, Pedro García Espinosa and Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC.
