The surgical unit will be inaugurated at the Pepe Portilla Children's Hospital and will be the first such institution operating outside the Cuban capital.

The main eye affections to be operated on at the center are traumatic and congenital cataracts and strabismus.

The initiative called Operation Miracle began in the province in 2006, when the entire population was tested to detect eye problems.

Since then, more than 23,000 patients have undergone eye surgery to correct their problems.
