Leinier Dominguez Beats Morozevich at Chess Super Tournament in Corus
After the regulation break, Cuban Grand Master Leinier Domínguez (ELO: 2,717) beat Russian GM Alexander Morozevich (2,771) on Thursday during the fifth round of the Corus chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Holland.

Domínguez, playing white, was able to penetrate the Nadjdorf variant of the Sicilian defense employed by Morozevich, who, even though he hasn’t had a great tournament, is no easy opponent.

Carlos Martínez Laporte informed us that Morozevich becomes the fourth GM in the 2,700 club that Domínguez has defeated.

The Cuban GM currently sits in second place at Wijk aan Zee along with Armenian Levon Aronian (2,750), Gata Kamsky from the US (2,725) and Jan Smeets from Holland (2,604). All of them have three points and are chasing the young Ukrainian Sergey Karjakin (2,706), who sits alone in first with 3.5 points after his victory over host Daniel Stellwagen (2,605).

The other victories in the fifth round belong to Aronian who deafeated Slovakian Sergei Movsesian (2,751), and Dutch Loek van Wely (2,618) who surprised Azerbaijan Teimour Radjabov (2,761).

Ivanchuk (2,779) drew with the Norwegian “phenomenon” Magnus Carlsen (2,776), as did Kamsky with Chinese Wang Yue (2,739) and Smeets with British Michael Adams (2712).

Carlsen, Van Wely, Radjabov and Movsesian are tied for third with 2.5 points; followed by Stellwagen, Ivanchuk, Adams and Wang with two points; and Morozevich with 1.5.

Friday’s matches include fierce duels between Carlsen-Karjakin and Aronian-Ivanchuk, while Leinier will meet Smeets. Rounding out the day are matches between Movsesian-Morozevich, Wang-Adams, Radjabov-Kamsky and Stellwagen-Van Wely.
