Cuban writer Miguel Barnet on the Romulo Gallegos Prize Jury
Mexican Elena Poniatowska, Argentinean Graciela Maturo and Venezuelans Stefania Mosca and Humberto Mata, are also part of the jury, which will be in charge of assessing works published in the Spanish language from January 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008, Prensa Latina news agency reports.

The Celarg Foundation, attached to Venezuela’s Culture Ministry and organizer of the event, has established February 28, 2009 as the closing date for entries and said that results will be announced on August 2.

Poniatowska, with her book El tren pasa primero, was awarded in the previous edition of the Prize, which has also been won by figures like Gabriel García Márquez, Enrique Vilas-Mata and Francisco del Paso.

Barnet, President of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists and 1994 National Literature Prize winner, is the author of the novels Biografía de un Cimarrón and Canción de Rachel. Poetry, essays and chronicles are also part of his work.
