The 2008 Felix Varela Award was given to Cuban doctor Pedro Pablo Rodriguez
In order to hand in this distinction, the jury took into account to wide and fruitful research work carried out by Rodríguez in the social sciences field, related to the study of Cuban history and the life and work of José Martí.

On the other hand, the Education and Culture section made a special recognition to the poet and poetry reader Luis Carbonell, the teacher of generations of Cuban artists, while the Environment section highlighted the work of the Brigade General Francisco González López.

Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, the Societies’ yearly work balance awarded the condition of Honor Member to doctor Julio García Oliveras, vice-president of that institution and director of the Bimestre Cubano journal.

Doctor Daisy Rivero Alvisa, president of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, emphasized the need to achieve a greater participation of young people in the workshops with a high patriotic and scientific value that are organized by the organization.

Founded on January 9, 1793, influenced by the renewing ideas of Illustration, the SEAP was organized in Havana by a group of important nationals, among which stood out Francisco de Arango y Parreño, Tomás Romay and father José Agustín Caballero.

Related today with the scientific-technical, economic and social work of the country, it groups together important specialists from its four fields: Education and Culture, Social Sciences, Economy and Science and Environment.
