According to the report one child dies every three seconds in the world before his first birthday.

The study rates child development, mortality and nutrition among children under five years and those not attending school from 2000 to 2006.

Cuba follows Japan, Spain, Canada, Italy, Finland, Iceland, France, the UK, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Luxemburg, Austria, Australia, Denmark, Ireland and Switzerland. The US ranks 23rd.

Save the Children highlights the fact that Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa have sized down infant mortality under five years.

This report follows the 1990-1994 and 1995-1999 ratings in 88 and 118 countries, respectively, using similar indicators.
