"It has been an excellent visit," he told journalists gathered at the Mausoleum of the Soviet Internationalist Soldier, while a smiling Medvedev thanked them for reporting his visit, on an agenda also including official meetings with Raul Castro and a tour of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Havana.

Both presidents laid a wreath at the Mausoleum, in the outskirts of Havana, where the remains of 67 Soviet international soldiers were buried.

At the end of the ceremony, they inspected several land, naval and air forces platoons of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

Also attending were Cuban Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas, Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and Russian Ambassador Mikhail Kaminin.

Medvedev arrived in Cuba on Thursday, the last leg of his Latin American tour, also including Peru, Brazil and Venezuela.

The governments of Cuba and Russia are making efforts to step up cooperation in transport, energy, communications, education, the medical-pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology and tourism.
