Cubans Celebrate Volunteer Day First Organized by Che Guevara
A national day of volunteer work takes place November 22, 49 years after Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara first organized this type of event in 1959.
The Cuban Workers Federation (CTC) and the Young Communist League (UJC) made the call this year with a focus on food production. Volunteer activities will take place throughout the year up until November 22, 2009 when the 50th anniversary of the first volunteer work day will be celebrated.
Volunteers will also work to repair homes and facilities damaged by the three major hurricanes that smashed through the country in the last few months, and prepare for the upcoming sugarcane harvest.
The UJC also called on its members to make a special effort in preparation for the January 1, 2009 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
