Poet, essayist and Casa de las Americas director Roberto Fernandez Retamar said that the year 2009 is marked by several historical events in Cuba, including the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

The institution has scheduled many activities to celebrate its anniversary, like the opening of a collection of 100 Latin American works of art.

The Casa de las Americas is also launching 30 new books, mostly written by Chilean authors, during the 18th International Book Fair of Havana that will be devoted to Chile and to that Cuban cultural institution. Intellectuals and artists are paying tribute to Haydee Santamaria on April 2009, launching a book with some of her correspondence and personal files and giving a special concert in her name.

The Casa de las Americas Literary Awards, also turning 50 in 2009, will be granted from February 2 to 11, and the institution will bestow an extraordinary award to the studies on Latinos in the United States.

Vicaid that Casa de las Americas' mission is to promote cultural relations among intellectuals from Latin America and the Caribbean.
