The ambassador said that there are 286 young men and women from Saint Lucia now studying in Cuba in different provinces and specialties, who, after their graduation, will constitute an important contribution to the professional force needed by their nation for its development.
He made reference to the international solidarity needed to obtain the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters who marked the 10th anniversary of their unjust incarceration on September 12, for having monitored the actions of anti-Cuba groups that planned to carry out criminal acts against the Cuban people.
Internationally known as the Cuban Five, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez are serving harsh sentences, including life imprisonment.
For his part, the President of the Santa Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association recalled the internationalist vocation of Cubans, their heroic struggle and hospitality, and the need for increasing public awareness with regard to helping the Cuban people with donations to alleviate the damage caused by the recent passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
