"Cardenal has always been a very close friend of Cuba. We admire his significant work as a poet and his loyalty to the Cuban Revolution".
"He gave a lesson of consistency and dignity in times when many others renounced to their ideas. Today we live a time of changes and hope in Latin America, and Cardenal has supported this process with his voice and prestige."
The statement also recalled that the 2006 electoral victory of the Sandinista Front (FSLN) helped break US hegemony in Central America.
Nicaragua´s new government has been working for the Nicaraguan people. It has joined the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) and defied the United States´s aggressive policy at international forums, the text added.
