Holguin Writer  Jose Luis Garcia won the George Woodyard Latin American Theatre award in Connecticut
The contest, created by Laurietz Silk in 2006 with support from the American University, gathered participants from 16 countries aspiring to win a prize whose value lies mainly in its publication in the well known magazine Latin American Theatre Review.

Born in Holguin, in 1955, Jose Luis Garcia is a graduate of Spanish Literature at the Teachers Training Institute of Holguin. After working as a teacher for a few years, he turned to journalism and started reporting for the local Ahora newspaper.

Garcia has won several awards as is the case of the National award of Literary Workshops in Varadero in 1979, and the first prize of the city with his short story book “The silences of the nightingale”. He is also the recipient of a mention in the Casa de las Americas 2001 Contest with his work “History of a photo”.

Jose Luis Garcia has worked for the Juventud Rebelde newspaper and El Caiman Barbudo and Chasqui magazines. He currently works in the province’s radio station.
