A faithful follower and admirer of Luciano (Chano) Pozo and a man who educated himself, the man with the golden hands never imagined, as he played the drums in his neighborhood, made out of chorizo and sweetened milk cans, that one day, he would become one of the best percussion players in Cuba and the world.
On occasions he was qualified as crazy, for his technique of using his long nails to play the drums, but afterwards, his unique style was imitated by the best players, apart from capturing the attention of well known artists all over the world.
During all of his artistic trajectory we went through different groups, among which were Ases del Ritmo, Estrellas Nacientes, Jazz-band Swing and Los amigos, and he shared the stage with important international personalities such as Josephine Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Frank Sinatra and Los Chavales de España.
Songs such as Mami dame mantecado , No metas la mano en la candela or Perico no llores más will remain in the records of Cuban musical history.
His art earned him recognitions such as the Honor Member of the UNEAC, La Giraldilla, the National Culture Award, the Grammy Awards in 2001 and 2002 and the Gran Premio Cubadisco.
He never lost his identity and the love for his homeland; he always felt admiration for the Cuban Revolution and its social program. On one occasion he expressed: “first we have to take into account your music, your homeland and your flag, and then the rest may come.”
