Cienaga de Zapata, home to the largest swamps in Caribbean Islands, has been death-free in 32 months.

Dominguez thanked primary health care during pregnancy, improvement of basic gynecology, obstetrics and pediatric services like neonatology and pediatric therapy for these results.

The above-metioned services include homes for pregnant women to provide proper medical attention to those below weight, suffering from anemia and other conditions and for residents in rural areas.

Mortality rate in Matanzas until June rounded 2.8 per every 1,000 live births, only reached in highly developed countries.

There were 2,800 births, or 63 more than in similar period in 2007, plus eight deaths owed to suffocation, birth defects, intraventricular haemorrhage and sepsis.
